Summer Camp YPO-JLU

11th July 2019

Monkey-ing around on the High Ropes

We woke up this morning after the jazz festival to cooler temperatures, but still alert as ever as some of the campers went running along with the councillors for the running club; while others did their first ever Taekwondo lesson led by Charlotte, another camper! At YPO-JLU we love giving campers a stage, and a platform to showcase their voice and talents - and a morning Taekwondo class at 7 am is no exception!

After learning how to kick butts, we went to breakfast and then attended the first speaker of the day. Today’s speaker is Rhett Godfrey, who’s all about systems and how to find solutions through systems. He cares about sustainability and being eco-friendly. He also touched upon the idea of self-concept.

Then the real action began, the campers got all hyped up again once after lunch we hit up the high ropes course! The high ropes course is like having a jungle gym in the middle of the Swiss alpine forest. Imagine zip-lining across sweeping vistas of the alps, climbing, swinging, and jumping from ropes to ropes like a modern-day Tarazan! It was a cool way to experience another side of Switzerland, one that is smack middle in nature but yet at the same time, where the campers can use their quick-wit thinking with their hands and feet. There are different obstacle courses, and campers can progress at their own pace through whichever obstacle course they choose. Now, this is what we call monkey-ing around!

In the evening we ended the night with Kerry Max Cook, a speaker who was an American former Death Row inmate who was wrongfully convicted. He spoke on the topics of his past being in prison, how he cleared his name and the lessons that he learned as a captive, a free man and now; a father. His talk was an intimate and exhilarating speech on becoming oneself and finding out what you stand for and who you want to be - no matter the circumstances. It was an inspirational way to end the night.
