Summer Camp YPO-JLU

18th July 2017

Down The Canyon!

All campers arrived to Chateau D'Oex where campers divided into small groups and hiked down to the river lead by assigned counselors. canyoning entices campers to experience first hand the thrill of adventure of been between the rocks formed by the water of the river. During canyoning all campers travelled to a canyon, La Tine, not far from Chateau D'Oex. They used a variety of techniques such as walking, scrambling, climbing, jumping and swimming. The Tine canyon is cut into the bedrocks stone, forming a narrow gorge with beautiful sculpted walls and waterfalls.

After the exiting experience all campers returned back to Chateau D'Oex to a hearty BBQ lunch. Meanwhile everybody was unwinding, playing volleyball, laying under the sun, and making friends with each other. This was a rewarding moment after successfully finishing the canyon excursion.

After lunch all the campers met their counselors to discuss the events for the afternoon back at the Hotel. Everybody walked together to Le Chaussey where the adventure began! They split into two teams, one to build an emergency shelter from tarpaulin and rope. The second worked on creativity and communication through a series of mentally challenging team tasks. Both of these activities teach and extend campers ability to effectively communicate and allow other team members to participate in the building exercises.

For the evening session there was an awe inspiring presentation by Kerry Max Cook from the US., Kerry has an extraordinary story about his false imprisonment in solitary confinement for 20 years and his constant determination to be released and that same determination that drives him to still fight for his exoneration.
