Summer Camp Ardèche, France
Mini descent, mocktails, and football!
Excitement is in the air!
It's currently 9.00 PM and we've had a huge day here at Ardeche. After the intensity of the Canoe Commando game last night, everybody got a good rest and even a sleep in, rising at 8.30 and having a leisurely breakfast at nine. The next few hours all of the campers had off as chill time, where they could read, play pingpong or basketball, while the counsellors quickly prepared for the mini-descent. Lunch was eaten here at 12.00, and by 1.00 the whole camp was down on the water and ready to head out!
In a smooth succession the whole team managed to disembark from the Village Camps campsite and begin their trail downstream, with Crocodile acting as Momma Duck and Moose, Poodle, Pebble, Arch, and the two french guides on the river team. All of the other counsellors spread out among the campers - a fleet of 29 ships - as we made our way down stream. After a few good rapids, including Charlemagne, we made it to the Vallon Pont d'Arc - a beautiful natural limestone arc of world renown. We shored up just afterward for snacks and a session of cliffjumping, before hopping back in and paddling another kilometre to the exit point. Everybody made it with plenty of time, and the disembarking was flawless. We left the boats down on the river (where we will begin the Grand Descent on Tuesday) and caught a bus back to camp by 5.00.
After returning their gear and having dinner, the campers are now gearing up for a great night of football. The blue-band girls have set up a juice bar where they are making mocktails with pinneaple, mango, and berries, and the rest of the camp are all dressed in their pajamas. Thismorning the kitchen babes presented a 'tidiest tent' award to one of the male tents and one of the female tents, and those lucky campers have gone into to town for an icecream!
Tomorrow the senior campers will be visiting the incredible Via Feratta, and then we'll all be preparing for the massive Grand Descent!
