Summer Camp England

6th August 2013

International Night!

This morning kicked off with some sunshine and clear skies, a pleasant change from the few rainy days we have had. As usual, all campers broke off into their morning programs and worked on improving all of their various skills until lunchtime. As the end of camp is nearing, all the programs are finishing off projects and preparing for the big events to come, such as the art display of all of Creative Arts' work, the Performing Arts show on Friday, the Camper v. Counsellor Football game on Friday, the Activity & Adventure camp-out, the Horse Riding examination and the Golf tournament.

After lunch, Yellows spent the first part of the afternoon watching the Yellow football campers beat the counsellors, while Blues and Reds joined some afternoon activities such as jewelry making, athletics and hockey. At the 3pm meeting our three Leaders In Training (former campers now training to be counsellors) led Kangaroo Court, punishing a few naughty counsellors and campers for having done silly things. Afterwards, the camp split off into country groups to add the final touches to their International Night presentation.

Now that all 105 campers have gotten to know much more about each other on personal levels, today came the time for everyone to open up and show what their country and culture means to them. With eight different groups - Lebanon, Russia, France, Austria & Germany, Australia & UK, Italy, Spain & Latin America, Belgium & Switzerland and United Nations - we were treated to a beautiful night of diversity. The first part of the evening was spent tasting food from all the different countries that campers had spent all afternoon cooking. As a digestive treat, the second part was spent in the theatre, where every group performed a presentation about their country through song, dance and comedy.

At bedtime, each and every camper had learned something knew, whether it was the fact that they liked a new type of food or why the Italian flag was green, white and red. After a celebration of diversity, culture and tolerance and a nice, full stomach, it was time for bed!
