Summer Camp England

Week Two: Ready, Set, Go!

Mondays here at camp aren't your usual Monday. Here, Mondays come with a burst of energy and excitement as they mark new beginnings. Week Two is always a special one, as campers and counsellors make the most of every minute left together.

So, despite a slightly difficult wake-up after two consecutive lie-ins, Week Two kicked off stronger than ever. All the programs are running smoothly and the campers are learning a lot. Football and Golf, for example, are learning to persevere and stay strong even in adversity as they played under the rain for some of the morning. Creative Arts is learning patience, as they create detailed drawings out of pieces of wool. Performing Arts is learning to "wow" an audience - which we're sure they'll do after their performances during talent night. English is learning and improving its language skills, which we've all been able to witness as their involvement in activities and daily conversation drastically increases. Horse Riding is learning to be studious as campers prepare for an examination they will have on Thursday for which they must learn various terms. Finally, Activity & Adventure is learning bravery, as all campers launched themselves down hills on mountain boards yesterday. With a few scratches and some muddy clothes, all campers were back safe and sound with lots of fun stories to share.

In the afternoon, counsellors offered different activities for the campers, including volleyball, tie-dye, dance, dodgeball and hockey. The evening was spent with the colour groups. The Yellow house was able to play on different games and relax in Muggles (an on-campus arcade). The Red house had a pool party, during which they played games, relaxed in the Jacuzzi and had a few snacks. The Blue house spent the first part of the evening playing extreme dodgeball. The latter part of their evening was an ice-cream party that was awarded to them as part of a camp-wide competition to speak English. With eight secret judges roaming around camp, colour groups are awarded points for speaking English or have points taken away from them for speaking different languages. The ice-cream party was the first prize but more are to come, giving a chance to the Yellows and Reds of proving they can win.

We have a busy, emotional week ahead of us but, by the looks of the strong friendships, the constant laughter and the bursting energy echoing down the halls, we can all tell it will be a memorable one!
