Believe in yourself
Would you still do what you are doing if you had one month left to live?
This morning, David Allen told us about some key lessons he learnt in life from a young age. Having nearly died on the side of a "dirty, dusty road with an AK 47 bullet in his chest" he told us of the importance of valuing the small things in life: Drinking water, watching the sun set and spending time with loved ones. He encouraged LTC campers to enjoy life to the fullest, take opportunities and just try new things.
The second lesson he shared from that experience is to value your team. No matter the environment you will work in, don't turn your team away. Never think that it is all about you, if you do, you will fail before you even begin. Working with a team implies having to call people into line and give them criticism.
Mr Allen illustrated the need to know how to give such criticism. Begin with a compliment, then give the criticism and end with another compliment, People have 2 reactions to criticism: fight or flight. So do not over do the criticism, it could have the reverse effect. LTC campers realized that they already have leadership in their bones as they identified what attributes make good leaders. The group later learnt how to manage stress and identify what is "on their plate" and how they could find ways to "fill their tank up" as to better deal with the pressures of life.
David Allen also stressed that our attitudes towards life depend on the thoughts we have every day. We have around 65 000 thoughts per day and they are often more negative than positive. Our young adults wrote at least 6 things they were grateful for and were left imagining what life could be like if we had 65 000 positive thoughts a day.
After a nice lunch we went by bus to Chateau d'Oex to discover Aquatic hiking (canyoning) accompanied by a professional canyon instructor .
La Tine : is an amazing place for scenery, with jumps, swimming and slide on the rock polished by the water. Canyon is ideal for everybody. The sculptures made by the water amazed us!
Most of the time we could walk in the canyon and climb up the cliff to jump. Some of us faced the fear, but we truly enjoyed pure adrenaline and appreciate that wonderful experience.
If you want to forget your troubles of everyday's life, that's the best way, you will disconnect in a natural environment.
Tonight, Kerry Max Cook came from Texas to share his story. He was wrongfully accused of murder and was on death row for 22 years.
The case later became one of the most poorly conducted trials in U.S. history. While in prison, he lost his brother and father, and was beat, cut, and stabbed. Towards the end of his time in prison, he only has his mother, who told him she would never forgive him for his past mistakes.
Fortunately, his mother forgave him when he was released.
His message: "Avoid others' negativity. No one can make you feel bad. People who try to hurt others have been hurt themselves."
