Roots & Shoots Seminar
with Dr. Jane Goodall

This is a special seminar for students and teachers who want to learn more about the Roots & Shoots programme for international schools in cooperation with the Jane Goodall Institute.

What is Roots & Shoots?

Roots & Shoots is the environmental and humanitarian programme for youth (preschool to university) of The Jane Goodall Institute (JGI).  Their mission is: 1) To foster respect and compassion for all living things; 2)  To promote understanding of all cultures and beliefs; and 3) To inspire each individual to take action to make the world a better place for animals, the environment and the human community.

History of the Roots & Shoots Programme

The Jane Goodall Institute believes that the future is in the hands of the world's young people.  With this in mind, Roots & Shoots was founded in 1991 in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, East Africa.  In only a few years, the programme has grown dramatically.  Roots & Shoots groups are now found in over 38 U.S. states and more than 30 other countries.

Goals of Roots & Shoots

  • To implement positive change through learning about, caring for and interacting with the environment.
  • To demonstrate care and concern for all non-human animals.
  • To encourage youth to plan and take action to help others in their community.
  • To enhance understanding between individuals of different cultures, ethnic groups, religions, socio-economic levels and nations through our global communication network.
  • To help young people develop self-respect, confidence in themselves and HOPE for the future.

Roots creep underground everywhere and make a firm foundation.

Shoots seem very weak, but to reach the light they can break open brick walls.

Imagine that the brick walls are all the problems we have inflicted on our planet.

Hundreds and thousands of roots and shoots, hundreds and thousands of young people around the world, can break through these walls.

You CAN change the world.

Jane Goodall
